How to add hold music to Google Voice

4 steps · about 5 min

Before you start

Personal (consumer) Google Voice has no custom hold-music setting. This only works on Google Voice for Google Workspace, on the Standard or Premier add-on.

The steps

  1. 1Sign in to admin.google.com with the Google Voice Admin role.
  2. 2Go to Apps → Google Workspace → Google Voice → Settings.
  3. 3Open the Hold Music section and click Add Audio.
  4. 4Choose Upload Audio File (or Text-to-Speech), preview, and Save — it applies to every licensed user in your domain.
Format gotcha

There's no per-user option — hold audio is domain-wide. And on personal Google Voice, the only “hold music” is a fixed default you can't change.

Or skip the hold entirely

Hold music makes waiting nicer. It doesn't answer the call. Lobby does — a warm AI receptionist that picks up 24/7, in English and Spanish, so callers never wait on hold in the first place.
